Why Learning Script is Important 學習寫英文書寫體(草寫)的理由

Many Chinese students have trouble reading cursive script. Even fewer people can write cursive script. Here are some linguistic and social reasons why everybody should learn to write cursive script.

Linguistic reasons for learning to write cursive script: clarity, convenience, speed and memory.

Social reasons for learning to write cursive script: perceived maturity (looks less childish), freedom from computers (during blackouts), perceived intelligence and warmth (handwriting provides a personal touch).

Nice blog!! Linguistic reason alone (enhancing memory of words/phrases) makes cursive writing worthwhile. I wonder how much faster cursive writing is than regular (non-cursive) writing.

I don't use cursive so often nowadays, but even for me, writing the entire lower-case alphabet (abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz) in cursive (10+ seconds) is roughly twice as fast as printing (20+ seconds). That's one reason why I think our students should also learn cursive.
Come to think about it, I write in a semi-cursive fashion. Not entirely cursive to enable the non-cursive reader to still read it with ease, while still connecting many of the letters in a somewhat cursive manner. It's a compromise, since the point is to communicate a message to someone else, while saving myself some time.
